Fallen Warrior

Fallen Warrior

The roots of a fallen tree, lit orange by last light as the moon rises in the background, shot at over 10.000 feet elevation in the White Mountains, East of Bishop, CA.

I made this image on a trip with my cousin Steven Gilbert, high up in the White Mountains where the ancient Bristlecone Pines live. Who knows how old these roots are, that once clung to the meagre soil here? To me, this image speaks of life beyond death, the way that art transcends the life of the artist. The roots seem to form the figure of a bearded pirate, with huge windswept hair, defying age and decay while embracing the sky.

The orginal was shot on 4X5 Fuji Velvia transparency.
